Sony has suffered a huge decline in recent years and the company has been forced to take some very uncomfortable measures. For example, Sony has been forced to sell its VAIO PC division, headquarter property around the globe, and worse had to lay off thousands of workers. While all of those things reduced losses, they did not bring the Japanese giant back into the black, so perhaps the most drastic decision has yet to be made.
Rumors that Sony will have to sell its Xperia smartphone division will not go away and even the company’s CEO, Kazuo Hirai confessed that smartphones are not Sony’s focus moving forward. He revealed that over the next three years the company will focus on its camera sensors and its PlayStation consoles, both of which do make money for the company.
While the Xperia smartphone range has done ok in recent years, it has failed to build momentum and in the face of increasing competition Sony could be tempted to off load the division. Its TV business is also in danger for similar reasons, although at the moment it is thought that executives within the company see more of a future in TV than they do in smartphones.
Camera sensors will be Sony’s driving force in the coming years and the company predicts a 2500% increase in profit over that time thanks to those sensors that are used by rival smartphone companies. Likewise, the PlayStation line is rejuvenated and is a consistent money spinner for the company, so that will also be a focus of Sony moving forward.
