Unknown Update Lands on AT&T/Sprint Samsung Galaxy S6

A mysterious update has landed on the Samsung Galaxy S6 running on AT&T’s network, with no changelist accompanying the software. On top of that, users of Sprint are also reporting the upgrade that weighs in at 237MB and seems to add nothing new in terms of features of software enhancements. It certainly is not Android related as the GS6 remains on Lollipop 5.0.2.

Just two days ago a 159.29MB update landed on the Galaxy S6 flagship, but that did have a changelog that revealed improvements to the fingerprint scanner, new features for the image editor, and improvements with the UI. However, this new patch does not detail anything, which really makes us think there should be a rule whereby carriers simply must provide a changelog for all updates.

Just last week the European variant of Samsung’s recently launched smartphone received a 138.32MB update, which was sent out to deal with an issue where apps close earlier than they should. This is the most likely candidate for the AT&T/Sprint roll out happening now, but nothing has been confirmed by either carrier or indeed by Samsung.

ASUS to Launch ZenWatch 2 at Computex in June

The ASUS ZenWatch among the best wearables available, a nice blend of premium design and solid spceifications. The company has said before that we would have to wait until next year to see a ZenWatch 2, but now it seems that the device may appear sooner, next month in fact.

ASUS CEO Jerry Shen was speaking last month in New Delhi while launching the ZenFone 2 in India when he said that the ZenWatch 2 would probably launch in 2016. However, according to sources in Taiwan, Shen has now gone back on that and said it was a “misunderstanding” and that the smartwatch will actually be announced and Computex and will launch in the third quarter.

The Computex trade show takes place in Taipei, Taiwan during the first week of June (it starts June 2nd this year) and it the biggest computer trade show in the world. That’s interesting that ASUS would choose a computer expo to launch a wearable and not a mobile one such as IFA, but the company is obviously using home turf advantage.

LG Could Build New Nexus Smartphone

LG and Google have a long backstory as partners, after-all it was LG that teamed up with Mountain View for the first two Nexus smartphones, the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. With the Nexus 6 Google decided to go for something new and brought in Motorola to build the flagship bothering device that is supposed to showcase the best of stock Android.

Time flies as the Nexus 6 is now 8 months old and we are starting to wonder what the next Nexus smartphone will be. While it will not carry the Nexus 7 name, as there is already a tablet with that branding, it seems that LG may come back into the mix and build the handset. Google is reported to be considering numerous manufacturers (including Motorola again), and LG is among them.

Whether the Korean company would consider another Nexus project in the wake of its own flagship success with the G3 remains to be seen, although an anonymous insider claimed that a new Nexus is “under consideration at LG”. We presume the NEXT Nexus smartphone is already deep into development, so we can only expect that Google already has a good idea as to which company it will partner with… watch this space.

New Sharp Aquos ZETA is a High End Delight

Sharp has shown off its skills making bezel-less smartphones with a number of Aquos devices, and the Japanese brand is continuing that with its new handset. Named the Aquos ZETA SH-03G, the smartphone has a barely there of screen to body ratio and pushes smartphone specs to their maximum.

Although it packs a larger screen, the barely noticeable bezel ensures that the Aquos ZETA is actually smaller than a Samsung Galaxy S6. That screen is a 5.5-inch 1080p display that comes with Sharp’s IGZO tech that keeps power consumption low by refreshing at a slower rate when a still image is displayed. The sizeable 3000 mAh battery should then be good for two days of use says the company.

The other specs are also very high end, including the 64-bit Snapdragon 810 (hopefully without overheating), 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage built in, a 13 megapixel (OIS) snapper on the rear that Sharp seems very happy with. The rear cam is interesting as it features wide f/1.9 aperture, a GR certified lens by Ricoh, and what Sharp claims sets records for slow motion video capture. It performs 480p at 210fps and interpolated to 2100fps, making it capable of slowing down to 30fps footage 70 times.

The dazzling hardware continues with DTS Dolby Surround audio, a rear fingerprint scanner, and a metal unibody to give it a premium feel. Android 5.0 Lollipop is running the show out of the box, and Sharp’s light touch on the software ensures a near stock experience. The Aquos ZETA is launching in Japan this month, but we sure hope Sharp rolls this out around the world too in due course.

LG G4 Mini Launching in May

Last year, LG launched the G3 flagship and proceeded to release a number of handsets carrying the G3 branding, usually different lower end variants. With the G4 flagship announced and awaiting release, it seems the Korean giant has similar plans for its now core device. We can certainly expect to see a LG G4 Mini after the device was leaked via a Vodafone Hungary listing.

We are not really on board with the flagship mini craze, where manufacturers release watered down (in specs and size) versions of their flagships, but keep the premium look. LG is no stranger to such handsets of course, the company has previously launched the G2 Mini, G Pro Mini, and of course the various versions of the G3.

Vodafone lists the device as coming with a 5-inch 720p screen, a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon615, 2GB of RAM, and a 13 megapixel rear camera.

ASUS ZenFone 2 Disappoints, 25 Million Sales Expected this Year

Last year’s ASUS ZenFone was a minor sales hit and the well-received of the ZenFone 2 in January have led to the company saying it would sell 30 million smartphones in 2015. However, the first quarter was a slight disappointment and ASUS has had to tamper its expectations. The Taiwanese company now says it plans to shift 25 million units throughout the year.

ASUS managed sales of 3 million units during the opening three months of this year through the first quarter of the year, but the company planned for much more. One reason for the lower sales is because many ZenFone 2 admirers were waiting for the high powered 4GB version of the handset, which arrived later. When it did arrive the handset was in short supply, leading to fewer sales through the quarter. With production issues dealt with, ASUS expects to sell 4.8 million smartphones through the second quarter, which would mean 7.8 million for the first half of the year.

That still leaves the company some way to go to move 25 million units, but during third and fourth quarters ASUS thinks it will sell 9 million units during the third quarter and the final 6 million units in the fourth quarter. With rumors of a ZenFone 3 landing during the end of the year, sales could increase off the back of its launch.
