Samsung Shows Off Galaxy J1 (2016)

sasmsung-galaxy-j1-2016-2
Samsung has ushered in the Galaxy J1 (2016) rather quietly, officially outing the handset at an event in Dubai. This budget device has little to do with the jet set billionaires of Dubai, but Samsung decided to launch the product in the desert nation anyway.

As with the original Galaxy J1 last year, the 2016 edition is unlikely to make your eyes pop out in terms of its specs, but it is a solid entry level handset and actually looks pretty too. the handset gets a bit of an upgrade over its predecessor, coming with 4.5-inch screen (up from 4.3-inch) with 480p resolution, a 1.3 GHz quad-core Exynos 3475 CPU, 1GB of DDR3 RAM, a 5 megapixel rear camera, a 2 megapixel front facing lens, a 2050mAh battery, and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to run the show. All J1 models from 2016 pack LTE connectivity, something that was specific to a more expensive 4G model in 2015.

We had a specific gripe with the original J1, namely it was too expensive. It was an entry level smartphone but cost way too much for what is an extremely humble spec list. Sure, specs are not everything, but we have to consider Xiaomi is pumping out more affordable products with 1080p screens, 2GB of RAM, 13MP cameras, and other standout features.

With that in mind there is no surprise why Xiaomi has bloodied Samsung’s nose in China, and we are afraid it’s a similar story with the Galaxy J1 (2016) costs $135, which is just too much. However, admittedly the original model was a success and sold in millions, so clearly consumers are willing to pay more for their budget devices if it carries the Samsung name.

Xiaomi Debuts Redmi Note 3

Chinese company Xiaomi has raised the curtain on the Redmi Note 3, a device that follows a similar path to all the company’s previous handsets. That means once again Xiaomi has managed to package a smartphone with plenty of quality features, but still with a price tag that puts numerous rivals to shame. It is a balancing act the company excels at.

As we have become used to lately, the Redmi Note 3 comes in two variant configurations, with separate RAM and native storage options. The more affordable variant will come with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, with Xiaomi saying this handset will launch January 17 with a price equivalent to $152. The 3GB RAM version with 32GB of native storage has been announced but has yet to get a release date or a price.

All the other specs are shared by the two smartphones and include a 5.5-inch screen that packs 1080p Full HD resolution, a hexa-core 1.8GHz CPU and the Adreno 510 GPU, a sizeable 16 megapixel primary camera with phase detection auto focus, a 5MP front facing lens with f/2.0 aperture, and a massive 4050mAh juicer that should keep the lights on for a long time. Xiaomi has even managed to package a fingerprint scanner into this affordable product, located under the camera module it will provide enhanced security features.

Interestingly, the most popular manufacturer in China says the Redmi Note 3 comes with a new technology that automatically re-adjusts the readability of the display by changing the contrast of individual pixels in real time.
