Xiaomi Mi 5 Coming to MWC

boites-xiaomi-mi5We have waited ever so long for Xiaomi to finally launch the Mi 5 flagship, and after a year it seems the Chinese company will be unveiling the device next month, with the handset due to be launched at MWC in Barcelona.

To add fuel to the fire, a box that seems to be for the Xiaomi Mi 5 when it is sold at retail locations. As we know by now, and as the box suggests, the Mi 5 will be like all Xiaomi handsets and will only be launched in Asia.

Is the wait between the Xiaomi Mi 4 and the upcoming Mi 5 the longest we have had to wait for a flagship update from a major brand? We'll let you guys answer that, but needless to say nearly 20 months after launching the Mi 4 we are pretty enthused to see what the Chinese brand has cooked up with the Mi 5.

The handset is expected to launch in the coming weeks, which means it has been subject to a torrent of leaks of late. Arguably the most substantial yet it this, an image that purports to show the Mi 5 out in the wild for the first time. Comparing it to previous image leaks and just the general look, we are inclined to believe this is the real deal.

Yes, we can already see the iPhone influences and the Mi 5 does not look like it is going to change the design game in any big way, but then Xiaomi has never been a company to do that. You can expect a classy metal build of course, but the Chinese company has always been about combining blazing specs with affordability.

The device is set to launch on February 22nd (confirmed by Xiaomi), so we will have to wait until then to know the price, but the specs are much surer. Xiaomi has crafted a high spec'd device for sure with some cutting edge hardware packed into the chassis.

Microsoft’s Hardware Slump Continues, 4.5 Million Lumia Sales in Q4

Lumia-735-hero1Microsoft has always struggled to become a major player in the mobile hardware market, and it seems no matter what the company does changing the situation may be impossible. Let’s look at the last quarter, which was the fourth of 2015, including the Christmas period, and was the first in which the company’s new Windows 10 Mobile platform and related handsets were launched.

That seems like a recipe that could lead to some breakout success, after-all more consumers splash the cash during the holidays and Windows 10 Mobile is excellent, while the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL flagship are pretty spiffing too.

However, sadly (and I mean that), Microsoft only managed to sell 4.5 million Lumia handsets, a number that also includes devices running the now older Windows Phone 8.1 and earlier builds. That is a huge 49% decrease year on year, while company’s like Apple, Samsung, and Huawei have numbers that are not worth comparing.

Why mention them you may ask? The reason is because they are the companies Microsoft wishes to compete with, but they are companies so far out of reach. It goes without saying, Redmond is not reliant on its hardware sales to make ends meet, so this is likely to be brushed off and the company will try again.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Getting Boosted Battery (17 Hours Video Playback)

Samsung-logo-2121There have been plenty regarding the Samsung Galaxy S7, the Korean giant’s soon to be newest flagship smartphone. It looks like the company is conjuring another all-out masterpiece spliced with high end design and leading specs, the Galaxy S7 may also be at the higher limits of battery life expectations amongst its rivals.

Eldar Murtazin, a solid source who typically nails rumors accurately, suggests that the Galaxy S7 will be offering 17 hours of video playback, or at least that is the number Samsung will be touting when it outs the S7. The device will comes with a 3000mAh juicer, which is bigger than the 2,550mAh pack found in the Galaxy S6, so is that the reason for the improved playback.

Partly at least, and this is surely an attainable number too considering Samsung’s current flagship leader, the Galaxy Note 5, offers 15 hours of video playback. Of course, Samsung’s stated playback length will be under the conditions it tests in, your experience of the Galaxy S7 battery could be different. We will wait and see.

HTC Confirms Marshmallow for Sprint One M8

HTC One M8If you are rocking the HTC One M8 on U.S. carrier Sprint, then you can now get Android 6.0 Marshmallow for your handset. HTC confirmed on Friday that it is now rolling out the al-important update for its 2014 flagship, with the OTA release already out and about.

The news was dropped by Mo Versi, HTC’s VP of Product Management. As is usually the case, the update is being sent out in waves, so it could be the case that your One M8 has yet to receive the Marshmallow notifications while your buddies handset has. Regardless, wait it out and the prompt will land eventually. Incidentally, the update also includes the HTC One M8 Harmon Kardon edition.

HTC is saying you will need 50% of battery and a wi-fi connection to pull in the latest major build of Google’s mobile platform. Android 6.0 Marshmallow arrives with Doze Mode, app permissions, Google Now on Tap, and several of HTC’s own enhancements to the company’s proprietary apps and services.

Leaked Factory Render of Sony Xperia C6

CZ7jFi8WwAAotL8Hands up if you liked the Xperia C5 Ultra? We did, the device was just a solid (admittedly expensive) mid-ranger with a sprinkling of high end goodness thanks to its interesting cameras and near bezel-less design. Sony is now working on the Xperia C6, which will be smaller than the 6-inch C5 Ultra, but will take inspiration from its design.

That’s if a render of the device leaked online is to be believed. Reliable source, @OnLeaks says that the render is from genuine manufacturing schematics and is the real deal. The Xperia C6 seems to be borrowing the all-screen design of the C5 Ultra, which is no bad thing as that bezel-less look is one of the most catching on the market.

Those familiar with the Xperia C5 Ultra will notice that Sony has changed things up with the Xperia C6, most noticeably with its narrower stance. The device is likely to be launched at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona next month, so we will find out how accurate this render is at the launch.

John Chen has already said that there will be no new BB10 (BlackBerry’s own platform) hardware in the near future, although the company will support devices already running the software. Now another BlackBerry executive has given the clearest indication that the company is focused on Android hardware from now on.

“The Priv device is essentially our transition to Android ecosystem. As we secure Android, over a period of time, we would not have two platforms, and may have only Android as a platform [for smartphones]. But for now, we have BB10 and Android platforms for our smartphones...The future is really Android. We went for Android essentially for its app ecosystem. In addition, all the enterprise solutions that we have been doing have been cross-platform for a long time now. So it's a natural progression towards Android"-Damian Tay, senior director of APAC product management, BlackBerry
