Sprint CEO Points to Future Merger with Cable Company
Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure has basically just told Reuters that the company is open for business and willing to merge with a cable company under the right circumstance. Sprint is putting itself in the shop window as it is thought cable companies will now be looking to acquire a mobile wireless company.
The recent purchase of Cablevision means there are no viable mergers on the horizon in the telecommunications industry, which means companies in that sector will turn their attention to mobile carriers. T-Mobile is thought to be one prospect, but Claure is essentially saying that Sprint is too and that he could even see something happening in the coming months.
"It seems like everybody now wants to get into wireless which puts Sprint in a very good position. So I think the next few months or years are going to be very active in this industry. I think it’s going to be exciting times ahead in terms of consolidation but we don’t have any conversations with anybody."-Marcelo Claure, CEO, Sprint

ZTE Unveils ZMAX 2 in the USA
ZTE has a solid history of launching smartphones in the United States, not something most Chinese companies do. Also, while other Chinese companies raise prices when launching in the U.S., ZTE tends to keep its smartphones affordable. Take the ZMAX 2 for example, which is arriving on AT&T September 25th.
The ZMAX 2 comes with a 5.5-inch 720p resolution, a Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, 3000mAh battery, 4G LTE connectivity, an 8 megapixel rear camera, Android 5.1 Lollipop, and a pre-paid price tag on AT&T of just $149.99.
We think that’s a solid price for a decently spec’d device that is more or less carrying entry level value for money. What say you, are you interested by the ZMAX 2?
One M9+ goes Global while Butterfly 3 Lands in China says HTC
HTC has been pushing out numerous high end smartphones this year in an attempt to solve its financial woes, with none of those devices particularly selling well. The company has now decided to launch another two flagship quality smartphones, the Butterfly 3 as a Chinese exclusive and the global roll out of the One M9+.
Both handsets arrive on September 29th. The Butterfly 3 is a renamed J Butterfly, which until now has been exclusive in Japan, but will now arrive in China.
While the J Butterfly trumps the One M9 and One M9 Plus in a pure specs race by combining the best aspects of the two, it certainly loses out on the design front. That's really the big differentiator here besides the Butterfly's exclusivity to the Land of the Rising Sun. We could make a strong case for this being the blandest flagship quality smartphone HTC has pushed out for some time, and although it is probably a bit controversial considering the beauty of some of its smartphones, we think the company is falling into a design funk.
So, while you won’t be drooling over the looks of this handset, the specifications might just get you. They read like what’s what of the smartphone tech world right now, including Qualcomm's headline making 64-bit Snapdragon 810. Of course, the 810 is the chipset that has been at the center of issues with overheating, with Qualcomm denying the problem for the most part, while tests on other handsets prove otherwise. We hope HTC has found a way to solve any problems with the chip because it is a potent performer when not in the mood for heating some coffee.
The 5.2-inch Quad HD screen we first saw on the One M9+ has made the journey to the J Butterfly, with a pixel density of 565ppi we should add. 3GB of RAM provides the grunt for the handset, while a 2,700 mAh battery will hopefully keep the high end hardware running for long periods. Elsewhere there is a 20 megapixel rear camera with dual lenses, and a very enticing 13 megapixel front facing snapper; take that selfie phones. Out of the box the HTC J Butterfly comes with 32GB of built in storage, but it also comes with a micro SD card slot so you can expand the space if you need. As you would probably expect, this LTE device comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop with HTC's own Sense 7.0 UI on top.
The One M9+ is the most spec’d smartphone HTC makes and was launched in March as an exclusive in China. It was released in some other markets and now the company says that is available around the world.
The One M9 Plus is a stunning smartphone it seems, but it really does leave a lot more questions than it answers. For example, it is better spec'd than the One M9 proper, so why did HTC launch a flagship that was due to be immediately undercut by a superior model just a month later? Sure, the One M9 Plus is an exclusive to China and Asia, it is unlikely to ever come to Western markets, but then surely those in Europe and North America who buy the regular One M9 will feel short-changed knowing a better model is out there for roughly the same price.
It's a conundrum that is amplified when we consider that the One E9 Plus is also available, lacking the build quality of the M9's but still a beast in its own right. With the M9 Plus HTC is attempting to differentiate with the inclusion of a MediaTek processor, while there is the inclusion of a Quad HD screen. If a prospective One M9 owner is now asking "Where’s my Q HD screen?" it would be an understandable question.
Is this HTC finally saying that Europe and the US are no longer its most important markets? The company has struggled in recent years in those regions and could now be putting them has an afterthought. The Taiwanese giant says it thinks the One M9 launched last month is good enough to meet the needs of users in those regions in terms of specs. A bold claim, one that this long term HTC user cannot agree with.
Here is a quick glance at the key HTC One M9 Plus specs:
Android 5.0 Lollipop with HTC 'China Sense'
Dimensions: 150.99 x 71.99 x 9.61mm
5.2-inch LCD display with 1440 x 2560-pixel (Quad HD) resolution
MediaTek MT6795T octa-core chip clocked at up to 2.2GHz
3GB of RAM
32GB of internal storage
20MP main camera, 'UltraPixel' front cam

HTC Reveals Android Pay Handsets
HTC’s shoddy 2015 has not stopped the company from being one of the elite smartphone companies with high end smartphones and a close relationship with Android. Indeed, HTC is always among the first companies to update to new Android builds and now the company has revealed which of its devices will be getting Android Pay.
Android Pay is Google’s mobile payment service that is expected to launch during this quarter. HTC has said its devices will remain secure with no card details ever being stored on one of its devices. Speaking of those devices, the flagship One M7, One M8, and One M9 will be getting Android Pay, while a host of other high end smartphones across the various carriers in the United States.
OnePlus 2 Mini Render Leaks
You may remember back in January that OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei said the company would launch another handset besides the OnePlus 2 this year. The executive reconfirmed that last month when the OnePlus 2 arrived and now we are getting what reports to be a genuine render of the new smartphone.
Whether that’s called the OnePlus 2 Mini or some other name is unclear, while this render does not necessarily point to a bold new design ethos either. However, it is possible that this handset is metal as opposed to the plastic OnePlus builds with at the moment.
LG Class is metal but uninspiring
We have had a lot of information about the LG Class over the last seven days, and all those leaks hinted to a premium mid-range handset. However, its turns out the handset is actually a premium smartphone with budget specs and a hefty price tag. LG unveiled the Class officially today as an exclusive to Asian markets.
The best thing about the LG Class is its design. It sports an all metal body, which is a first for LG as even LG’s flagship G4 is clad in plastic and leather. While the Class is an uninspiring device in terms of specs, this metal design could be LG pointing to future handsets that will be metal, just like Samsung did with the Galaxy Alpha.
The LG Class sports a 5-inch screen with a 720p resolution, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 412, 2GB of RAM, LTE connectivity, NFC, Bluetooth 4.1, 16GB of internal storage, a micro SD card slot, 2050 mAh battery, 13 megapixel rear camera, and an 8 megapixel front facing lens.
So, good design, poor specs. We doubt LG is going to have a popular smartphone with the Class, especially as it costs $339, which is over $100 more expensive than far superior handsets like the ASUS ZenFone 2 and the 2015 Moto G.

Samsung Launches S Health for all Android Devices with 4.4 and above
Like Apple, Samsung usually likes to keep its own creations under lock and key to be used by customers who buy its smartphones. However, the Korean giant is in the sharing mood it seems as the S Health suite has now been made available to all Android devices, although you will need a handset rocking Android 4.4 KitKat or more.
The S Health app has been on the Google Play Store since the beginning of this year, but it has only been useable by people with Samsung’s high end Galaxy Model. The updated release opens the app up for download to more affordable Galaxy’s and even smartphones from other manufacturers, if they meet the software criteria.
S Health is a pretty excellent suite of fitness tools and health features. To make the absolute most of it you will need a device with a heart rate monitor, but there is much more you can do beyond that standout feature. Other goodies include the ability to count steps, record weight goals, and count calories, while there are a host of other features too.
The app is free to download from the Google Play Store right now.

Meizu Announces Sept 28th Launch of New Flagship
Meizu has announced a launch event that will take place on September 23rd, where the company will almost certainly debut its newest smartphone flagship. The invite comes with the slogan, MEIZU GO PRO, which probably doesn’t mean a collaboration with Go Pro (unfortunately), but is more likely signaling the Chinese company is preparing its MX5 Pro smartphone for launch.
The Meizu MX5 Pro will land with a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED screen, which actually kind of flies in other Meizu tropes as the company is known for decking its devices with blazing specs. So why it there no Quad HD panel on the MX5 Pro? Well, Meizu’s president has said in the past that the company thinks Quad HD is pointless on a smartphone, a view that is shared by many screen experts.
Other specs will include 4GB or RAM alongside Samsung's Exynos 7420 chipset, a 21 megapixel rear camera (made by Sony), a 5 megapixel front facer, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and an enticing $470 price tag at launch.
DROID Turbo 2 is the Moto X Force in the USA
When the Motorola Bounce was leaked a month ago we thought its rugged appeal would lend it to the DROID line up, the smartphones the company makes with US carrier Verizon. However, since then the Bounce became known as the Moto X Force in other leaks so we thought the DROID link was finished. However @upleaks reports today that the Moto X Force is indeed the DROID Turbo 2.
Moto X Force will be the international name for the device when it is launched, which is likely going to be in December. The DROID Turbo 2 will cost flagship money with the nations’ largest carrier, with a price on Big Red of around $640.
The handset comes with shatterproof 5.4-inch screen of the Quad HD variety, while a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 is serving as the processor. Elsewhere there is 3GB of RAM, a 21 MP rear camera, 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage, and a 3760 mAh battery.

Sony Debuts World’s First 4K Smartphone, the Xperia Z5 Premium
Sony has changed the game today with the launch of the Xperia Z5 Premium at the IFA trade show in Berlin. This super-phone is a step above the regular Xperia Z5 flagship that was also announced and is the first ever smartphone to feature a 4K screen.
Of course, 4K technology is currently reserved for TV screens, not even tablets get this resolution, and even in the TV industry 1080p panels are still the market share leaders. So Sony really has trail blazed with the Xperia Z5 Premium. Really, the company should have been leading screen tech before now, Sony is after-all known for making some spiffing TVs. However, until this handset the company has been content to just toe the line of other companies’ breakthroughs in the smartphone market.
The 5.5-inch 2160 x 3840 pixels Ultra-HD (4K) panel on the Xperia Z5 Premium boasts a pixel per inch density that is above 800ppi, a new standard that destroys the nearest rival, which is actually the Galaxy S6 by Samsung with 577ppi. It is obvious that Sony has crafted the best smartphone screen ever and one that other companies now have to play catchup with.
Of course, a screen alone does not make a good device, so Sony has made sure to deck the rest of the Xperia Z5 Premium with other stunning specs. Indeed, this may be the most spec’d out device currently available, although overall the company probably still wants the regular Xperia Z5 to be the handset most people choose.
A main reason for that idea is that we can only assume that insane 4K resolution is going to have an effect on battery life. Sony has been outstanding in this department of late, its flagships boasting the best battery life on the market in recent years. We can only assume that the company is putting that experience to good use here, but a juicer of 3400mAh seems small with that screen in mind.
Sony has been sticking to its OmniBalance design language for years and that’s no different here. That means the Z5 Premium comes with a glass panel body with a metal frame, it oozes quality and feels expensive, although we would understand if some wanted Sony to offer something a little fresher in terms of aesthetic.
Under the hood there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 that Sony says is not suffering from heat throttling, while 4GB of DDR4 RAM is ideal considering the 4K screen on this thing. There is 32GB of native storage on board and a micro SD card slot to expand, while Sony's newest Exmor 23 megapixel camera sensor serves as the primary lens.
